Many of the beautiful gowns featured in Southern popular culture and in films like Gone with the Wind were designed and sewn by enslaved women. Those women, like Elizabeth Keckly (Keckley), were experts in their craft. Some enslaved women were able to purchase their freedom with money earned from their skills.
