Tempy Bryant’s Emancipation-Era Dress
Freedom
ca. 1870
Tempy Bryant wore this dress as an enslaved woman and later as a free woman.
The everyday, personal belongings of formerly enslaved people can help us better understand the significance of emancipation and freedom. In many families, remarkable stories are often passed down alongside treasured heirlooms that represent resilience, survival, and hope.
Temperance “Tempy” Ruby Bryant was born enslaved in Alabama in the 1840s and gained her freedom through the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. This dress was passed down through several generations of her free descendants.
