African aesthetics and technological innovation do not only exist in the fictional world of the Black Panther, they exist throughout the African continent. African designers are creating modern fashions that are deeply informed by indigenous traditions, like this suit from South African knitwear brand Maxhose bt Laduma, which premiered at Lagos Fashion Week in 2018. Designer Laduma Ngxokolo was inspired by amakrwala, a Khosa ceremony marking the transition from boyhood to manhood in which the participant must purchase a new, adult wardrobe.
