Voodoo Guitar "Marie"

Moser transformed Hurricane Katrina’s debris in an act of cultural reinvention.
Hurricane Katrina caused lasting damage to New Orleans’s historic cultural communities. Not only were musical establishments destroyed, but many musicians lost their personal instruments. Musician Don Moser wanted to honor the city’s musical history and traditions in the storm’s aftermath.
Moser created Voodoo Guitar “Marie” using debris collected after Hurricane Katrina. He found pieces of copper, brass, and tin, and incorporated elements of New Orleans voodoo, including a voodoo doll and chicken foot. Moser said he wanted to “give people a peek into the supernatural world as it exists in the South.”
