Edmond Albius revolutionized the vanilla industry.
Edmond Albius (1829–1880) was born into slavery in Réunion, a French colony near Madagascar. The French established vanilla plantations in the early 1800s. In 1841, at the age of twelve, Albius invented a technique to hand-pollinate Vanilla planifolia. A thin barrier, called the rostellum, separates the male (anther) and female (stigma) parts of the orchid, and prevents the plant from self-pollinating. Pollination only occurs when the rostellum is lifted and pollen is transferred from the anther to the stigma.
Albius used a small piece of bamboo to lift the rostellum and press the anther against the stigma, transferring the pollen. His technique, still used today, revolutionized the vanilla industry. Albius received widespread recognition for his innovation but was not directly compensated.
