Royal African Company Stock Certificate

Slavery

1691

The Royal African Company, chartered in 1672 by the English government, traded in gold and enslaved men, women, and children along the western African coast. This stock certificate from 1691 demonstrates citizen investment in the company, which held the British trade monopoly in Africa from 1672 until 1698. The RAC shipped more enslaved persons to the Americas than any other institution.
