“Voodoo” is sometimes used as a derogatory term for African-derived spiritual traditions.
New Orleans Voodoo is a set of spiritual practices that has origins in West and Central African religions, as well as Catholicism. The ceremonies and rituals of Voodoo connect believers to the spirit world. Deities, saints, and spirits are called on to intervene in the physical world to heal the sick, help those in need, or curse enemies.
Marie Laveau (1801–1881) was a well-known New Orleans Voodoo practitioner. Known as the Voodoo Queen, she was famous for her medicines, spells, and curses. Her tomb is located at St. Louis Cemetery #1 on Basin Street, a popular site for believers and tourists.
