TSU’s museum educates students and engages the local community.
The University Museum at Texas Southern University—founded in 2000—contains more than 4,000 works of art by students, faculty, and TSU alumni. Its collection reflects principles taught at TSU’s art department—the importance of connecting with one’s own identity, embracing African diasporic aesthetics, and experimenting with various artistic media.
Dr. Alvia J. Wardlaw is a scholar of African American art and the director of the University Museum. In this video, she gives a tour of the museum, highlights objects from its collection, and explains the importance of training the next generation of artists and museum professionals.
