Placard from the Women’s March on Washington

Activism

2017

On January 21, 2017, millions of people worldwide participated in the Women’s March, a demonstration in support of equal rights and protection for women, people of color, immigrants, and the LGBTQ community. Kelly Elaine Navies made this placard for the march in Washington, D.C. It features a quote from the African American poet and feminist activist June Jordan: “We are the ones we have been waiting for.” Navies, an African American woman who attended the march with a group representing diverse races, ages, and sexual orientations, donated her sign to the museum to help document the various ways Black women engaged with the Women’s March.
