New Orleans Second Lines
Music
2018
The second line is a longstanding tradition in New Orleans.
Emerging from West African-influenced musical and funeral traditions, second lines are celebratory marches that pay tribute to individuals and communities. Social aid organizations and brass bands lead the procession, making up the “first” line. The “second” line is composed of dancers and revelers who follow behind the band. Second lines can be seen at weddings, graduations, and other major events.
As a dancer with the Tremé Sidewalk Steppers, Rodrick "Scubble" Davis comes from a family of second line dancers. In this video, he explains the history of second lines and their importance to his family. Catina Braxton-Robertson, president of the Ice Divas Social Aid and Pleasure Club, shares why the tradition is an important part of New Orleans culture.
