Making the Katrina Babies Documentary

2022
Many overlooked the experiences of children who survived Hurricane Katrina.
Filmmaker Edward Buckles Jr. was 13 years old when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. As a survivor, Buckles felt a deep responsibility to document the emotional toll the disaster took on his generation—those too young to be heard at the time. He created Katrina Babies to confront the silence surrounding the children who lived through Hurricane Katrina. He uses the film to amplify survivor voices and to spark conversations about trauma, identity, and resilience.
Through intimate storytelling, Katrina Babies is both a personal and collective act of remembrance. Motivated by his own healing journey, Buckles transforms pain into a path toward healing and acknowledgment.
