"Contos dos Orixás" comic book
Africa & the Diaspora
2018
"Contos dos Orixás" comics tell Afro-Brazilian superhero stories.
Based on Yoruba orixá (spirits) of southwestern Nigeria – beliefs also practiced in Brazil and the Caribbean – Brazilian artist Hugo Canuto’s Contos dos Orixás follows a group of Afro-Latinx super-humans. The comic book series reflects the Yoruba religion’s emphasis on fate, cosmology, and connection with the spiritual world. Contos dos Orixás blends these religious traditions with Afrofuturist art and Avengers style team-ups, world-building, and heroics. While entertaining, the series also presents striking representations of Afro-Brazilians and their culture.
