Ann Lowe, Fashion Designer

Fashion

1965

Ann Lowe learned to sew from her mother and grandmother. She later went to fashion school in New York City and became an in-demand designer. Though she faced discrimination throughout her career, Lowe designed the custom wedding gown that Jacqueline “Jackie” Lee Bouvier wore in 1953 to marry future President John F. Kennedy. Lowe dealt with setbacks throughout her career, including from clients who did not want to acknowledge a Black designer. Those setbacks did not stop her, however, from becoming a respected designer who influenced generations.
