“The Black Sexism Debate”
Education
1979
"The Black Scholar" tackled issues of class and gender among Black people.
In 1969, Nathan Hare launched The Black Scholar, an intellectual journal that examined class, nationality, gender, and Black history. Volume 10 focused on topics related to Black feminism and masculinity, featuring an article by Audre Lorde, poetry by Sonia Sanchez, and an interview with Kalamu Ya Salaam, among other pieces.
By putting different writers in conversation with one another, The Black Scholar helped a generation of Black Studies scholars and lay readers think critically about the diverse issues affecting the Black community.
