Education
2024
This strike led to the first Black Studies department in the United States.
In 1968, students went on strike to demand a Black Studies department and a college of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State College (now San Francisco State University). The strike, organized by the Black Student Union and Third World Liberation Front, also demanded more faculty of color. After months of protest, San Francisco State agreed to the students demands.
San Francisco State University (SFSU) has digitized a collection about the 1968 SFSU student strike. The collection includes broadsides, publications, flyers, student newspapers, and other material. It also includes videos from the Bay Area Television Archive which features footage of protests, press conferences, and interviews.
