Delita Martin’s "The Seeker"

"The Seeker" is part of Martin’s "Shadows in the Garden" series.

Delita Martin is an artist and graduate of Texas Southern University. A student of TSU professor Harvey Johnson, Martin’s work blends ideas of identity, community, and spirituality. In some of her art she depicts a veilscape, a spiritual landscape people exist in whether they realize it or not. Inspired by quilting traditions, Martin’s layered portraits use materials like paper, fabric, paint, and charcoal, and often depict Black women, including her own family and friends.

In "The Seeker", Martin’s veilscape is symbolized by the ginkgo leaf worn as a mask. The ginkgo leaf represents resilience, hope, and a balanced life.
