NCBS helped launch the formal study of the Black experience.
Formed seven years after the creation of the first Black Studies department in the United States, the National Council for Black Studies (NCBS) advocates for Black Studies programs at universities and colleges. NCBS hosts an annual conference featuring scholars from academic institutions across the country.
The NCBS logo features a man silhouetted against a globe with Africa at the center, reflecting the organization’s focus on advancing the study of African Americans from a worldwide perspective. Today, NCBS promotes academic excellence and social responsibility in Black Studies through networking, conferences, workshops, and more.
