Angola Guard Tower

Incarceration

1900

Established on the site of a former plantation, the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola became one of the foremost suppliers of convict labor in the state after the Civil War. Even after convict leasing declined, prison conditions remained harsh, resulting in numerous inmate deaths. This guard tower loomed over the prison, controlling the movement of thousands of prisoners. The Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola still operates today.
