André Leon Talley’s Sleeping Bag Coat
Fashion
ca. 2000
This coat is a symbol of Talley’s success in the fashion world.
André Leon Talley (1948–2022) was an important figure in the fashion world for more than 40 years. As a fashion writer, advisor, stylist, and critic, Talley rose to the upper echelons of the fashion world, challenging its elitism and racism. He also opened doors for Black designers, models, stylists, and fashion writers.
This Norma Kamali red sleeping bag coat was a staple in Talley’s wardrobe. Designed to look and feel as comfortable as a sleeping bag, Talley described it as his “favorite utilitarian go-to coat” and owned it in several colors.
